CINP

Advancing Treatment

Chemotherapy treatments can cause peripheral neuropathy by damaging the nerves in the extremities — the fingers, hands, arms, feet, and legs. Some types of chemotherapy are more likely to cause nerve damage than others and experts believe CINP is experienced by at least 30% to 60% of patients who receive these types of chemotherapy. This can occur in patients undergoing treatments from many types of cancer such as breast, colon, lung, prostate, etc.
The main symptoms are pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness. Many patients describe feeling “pins and needles” or a burning sensation. It can occur while patients are undergoing chemotherapy or it can also start months after treatment has been completed.
Unmet Medical Need
As more and more effective therapies for cancer are found and patients are living longer, peripheral neuropathy complications of chemotherapy are increasing in prevalence.
Despite this increasing prevalence, there are currently no approved therapies for CINP, and CINP has proven difficult to treat with conventional pain treatments.
